Chapter Seven

LEAVING INDIA

Edmond woke at the usual time and hurried to get ready for the day, wanting to get to the children’s room before they awoke. On the ship from India, they had all slept in the same room; therefore, he was always with them when they fell asleep and when they woke up. They had barely begun to make the adjustment to living in this enormous house and having distance between their rooms. He was grateful beyond words to have someone as kind and insightful as Elsie to help him care for the children, and he felt genuine confidence in her personal commitment to do whatever was necessary to help the children with whatever they needed. Still, Edmond wondered if the children were struggling with the adjustment of not having him there with them during the night. Ironically, he was struggling with it far more than he’d expected. There was certainly some relief in not being responsible for them every minute of the day and night, and yet he’d grown accustomed to feeling responsible, and if he wasn’t with them, he often found himself worrying about them. Only Elsie had made it possible for him to be able to force himself to relax when he was away from the children and feel reassured that all would be well, even in his absence. But he fought to force such ridiculous ideas away and focus on the happenings of the moment.

His thoughts rushed back and forth through a great many things regarding the children as he traversed the short distance between his room and theirs. He paused in the open doorway when what he saw was not at all what he’d expected. The sunlight peering dimly through the curtains drowned out the glow of the lamp still burning from the night before and illuminated the fact that two of the three beds were empty, and that all three children were asleep and huddled closely together in the same bed—with Elsie’s arm draped over all three of them, as if she could personally protect them from anyone or anything that might do them harm. She looked so perfectly peaceful, lost in sleep, and he couldn’t dismiss the thought that she also looked exceptionally beautiful. He’d certainly noticed a great many times during their brief acquaintance that she was lovely to look at, but he’d worked to keep his mind in its proper place, not allowing himself to even entertain the idea that he might find the nanny attractive. Even as he considered the bizarre possibility
